1. Contracts created for your specific niche by a lawyer who understands your business
There are many different online contract lawyers and customisable online contracts from which to choose. The one thing they all, well, let’s be nice and say most of them, have in common? They are all pretty generic.
Most of them are not created for specific niches in the online entrepreneur and creator space, like creators on Instagram or TikTok, UGC creators, YouTubers, life coaches, podcasters, social media managers, digital marketers, or course creators.
Too often, I see contracts for “service providers.” Well, that is a really broad term with a whole plethora of different niches with entrepreneurs who do completely different things in different ways for different clients in different places. Yet, there is one contract that can be tweaked a little for your specific niche?!
Even a lot of the so-called niche-specific online contracts that are either customisable templates or supposedly custom-made by one of these online contract lawyers are often titled with a niche like “lice coaching contract” or “brand sponsorship contract”, but they do not at all include crucial terms and systems specific to that niche.
The custom contracts that I create for my clients and the niche-specific contract templates I sell in my contract shop (for those who may not have the budget but have the time to customise a contract template for their specific situation) are truly created with that specific niche in mind, protecting you against all the risks in your particular niche and providing you with systems that fit your unique business.
2. Not just legalese but also practical step-by-step processes for workflow
Most online contract lawyers create contracts with liabilities, indemnities, confidentiality and all the other legalese in mind.
However, in my experience, not very many contract lawyers actually create contracts with practical processes in mind. That is so strange to me, as having (1) a clear scope and (2) a practical step-by-step process in place for whatever service you provide that is 100% clear to both you and your client is what prevents most issues.
Yet, in a lot of these contracts created by online contract lawyers that I have reviewed, I have found two major issues:
The scope is way too vague, leaving the services and deliverables open to interpretation (and rarely do we interpret things exactly the same way).
There is no step-by-step process spelt out in the contract with timeframes and deadlines for both you and the client.
If you do not have those two things clearly defined in your contract, you are exposing yourself to some major potential issues with your clients.

3. Not just protecting your assets but also crucial boundaries
Another major issue I have seen that no online lawyer seems to even think about is the protection of your energy and boundaries. To be fair, that’s not at the top of many lawyers’ minds, especially those in big law, because they don’t have any boundaries themselves for their own clients. I was not even allowed to have boundaries. If a client wanted us to work all weekend, we worked all weekend. Why? Because that’s what comes with the high fee the client pays, and otherwise, another lawyer will do it (not that I was actually paid that much).
But your clients should be paying you for the quality you provide, not the fact that you have no boundaries and will bend over backwards. And how do you keep providing high-quality services and products to your clients? That’s right, by ensuring you have the proper boundaries in place and protect your energy.
Unlike the contracts created by the other online contract lawyers (without boundaries), my contracts are created with important safeguards to protect your time, energy, and boundaries. So...
You won’t be overworking for your clients (without fair compensation or the option to say ‘no’).
You won’t have to deal with clients that use all sorts of communication mediums to reach you, like DMs on Instagram and LinkedIn, text messages, phone calls, etc., until you finally break and respond.
You won’t have to have calls late at night with clients when you should be spending time with your family, friends or whatever the heck you want to do with your own time.
4. Creating payment mechanisms that ensure you actually get paid
Another problem I see in too many but not all contracts created by other online contract lawyers is that they include payment mechanisms that leave you at risk of not getting paid.
My contracts are created with different payment options, including payment mechanisms that ensure you get paid before your services or products are delivered. Especially in the online entrepreneur and creator space, this is crucial.
Because you may have a contract in place and, thus, a legal basis and strong case to sue that client in court. But let’s be real. In most cases, where you are owed, let’s say, $5,000 to $25,000 by a client, which is a lot of money, it’s still not worth the costs of going to court. Especially when that client is located in a different state or country, it does not make sense to try to start court proceedings, even if the client will reimburse your legal fees. And I am not even talking about the toll it takes on an emotional level.
So, simply avoid all that by having the proper payment terms in place to ensure you get paid.
5. Contracts created for global use (so you can do business globally)
Speaking of clients in other countries, the next thing that separates me from other online contract lawyers is that my contracts are created for global use.
Most contract templates I have seen online are created for only one country, usually the US. For example, brand sponsorship agreements and digital marketing agreements will have indemnities exclusively for claims and fines from the FTC but not governmental authorities in other countries. But as an online entrepreneur or creator, you are doing business across borders with clients, brands, and an audience from countries all over the world. You need worldwide protection.
