Best Online Coaching Disclaimer

Crucial disclaimers every coach needs in their coaching disclaimer template

Before I get into every niche-specific online coaching disclaimer for every niche, make sure you have all the general coaching disclaimers that every coach must use, like the following:

  • A professional-client relationship disclaimer so that you can’t be held liable for giving professional advice you’re not licensed for.

  • A service description disclaimer so that clients can’t hold you liable if your coaching program is not exactly the way it’s described on your website or social media.

  • A methods & techniques disclaimer that gives you the flexibility to evolve your coaching methods and techniques.

  • An errors & omissions disclaimer because, let’s face it, we all make mistakes.

  • A technology disclaimer so that you can’t be held responsible if your client can’t participate in calls or open your eBook because they don’t have the appropriate hardware or software.

  • The crucial results & outcomes disclaimer so that clients can’t hold you liable if they do not achieve the results they wanted.

Want to know exactly what you need to include in each of these disclaimers so that you have a complete online coaching disclaimer for your coaching business?

Online coaching disclaimer examples for each specific niche

In this blog post, I’ve set out every niche-specific online coaching disclaimer for the following 13 coaching niches:

  • Life, accountability, goal, spiritual, and relationship coaching

  • Health and fitness coaching

  • Business, budget, money mindset, and financial coaching

  • Real estate coaching

  • Career coaching

Now, let’s get into each specific online coaching disclaimer.

1. The best online coaching disclaimer for... life, accountability, goal, spiritual and relationship coaches

The first online coaching disclaimer is for the coaches in the ‘life coaching’ category. You could be either a life coach or a coach in one of the subcategories, such as accountability, personal goal achievement, and (romantic) relationships. It’s coaching that concerns personal development or lifestyle improvement.

The risk you run as a life coach (or any other coach in this category) is that certain clients may construe any help you may provide them as therapy, psychiatric treatment or even medical advice.

That is why you need an explicit online coaching disclaimer stating that the following:

  1. You are not (acting in the capacity of) a licensed therapist or medical professional.

  2. Your advice or any communications you provide can not be considered medical, psychological, or therapeutic services.

Here’s one of the online coaching disclaimer examples you could use:

“The coach is not your psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, counsellor, or another type of mental health professional. Any information, advice, opinions, or any other communication from the coach does not constitute counselling or psychological, psychogeriatric, or therapeutic advice, treatment, support, or services. The coach disclaims any responsibility and liability in this respect.”

This online coaching disclaimer also helps protect you from being held liable if a client requires medical treatment or counselling but assumes the coaching advice as a form of therapy.

You’ll also want your client to represent and warrant that the client does not need any medical help.

If you are a licensed therapist, for example, but are not acting as the client’s therapist, you’ll need to add another crucial disclaimer for your profession.

There are also two other disclaimers that are crucial for life and spiritual coaches and coaches in certain other categories. These disclaimers will be discussed in another blog post.

2. The best online coaching disclaimer for... health and fitness coaches

The second online coaching disclaimer is for health and fitness coaches. As a health and/or fitness coach, you’re providing information to your clients in the areas of nutrition and physical health, and you certainly do not want that to be construed as giving medical or nutritional advice you are not licensed for. Your help does not replace any professional help a client may need for real (physical) issues they may have.

That is why you need an explicit online coaching disclaimer stating that the following:

  1. You are not (acting in the capacity of) a doctor or licensed nutritionist.

  2. Any information or advice you provide does not constitute medical or nutritional advice or treatment.

Here’s one of the online coaching disclaimer examples you could use:

“The coach is not your doctor or licensed nutritionist. Any information, advice, opinions, or any other communication from the coach does not constitute medical or nutritional advice, treatment, support, or services. The coach disclaims any responsibility and liability in this respect.”

With this online coaching disclaimer, you can’t be held liable if a client’s body responds badly to your fitness or meal plan...

If you are a medical professional or licensed nutritionist, for example, but are solely acting as the client’s coach, you’ll need to add another crucial disclaimer for your profession.

3. The best online coaching disclaimer for... business, budget, money mindset, and financial coaches

The next online coaching disclaimer is for the coaches in the ‘financial’ or ‘business’ category. You could be either a business coach in any business niche or a coach financial coach for a client’s business or the client’s personal life, like a budgeting coach or money mindset coach.

The one thing you really don’t want is a client holding you liable for losing money for whatever reason or their own bad accounting because they considered you to be their professional business or financial advisor or their accountant.

That is why you need an explicit online coaching disclaimer stating that the following:

  1. You are not (acting in the capacity of) a licensed financial, tax or legal advisor.

  2. You are not giving any financial, tax or legal advice or support.

Here’s one of the online coaching disclaimer examples you could use:

“The coach is not your (licensed) financial, tax or legal advisor. Any information, advice, opinions, or any other communication from the coach does not constitute financial, tax or legal advice, support, or services. The coach disclaims any responsibility and liability in this respect.”

You’ll also want to include a general disclaimer stating that you can’t guarantee and are not responsible for any (monetary) results or outcomes from your coaching.

4. The best online coaching disclaimer for... real estate coaches

The next online coaching disclaimer is for real estate coaches. Especially in real estate coaching, you must create clear expectations on exactly what you will do for the client and, more importantly, what you will not do for the client.

Some clients may expect that you will hand real estate deals to them as if you are their real estate agent or even negotiate deals for them. Other clients may expect that you will arrange all the financing for them and help them qualify for a loan while you’re not a mortgage broker.

That is why you need an explicit online coaching disclaimer stating that the following:

  1. You are not (acting in the capacity of) a licensed real estate agent, broker, or professional.

  2. You are not giving any legal, financial, or professional real estate advice or services.

Here’s one of the online coaching disclaimer examples you could use:

“The coach is not your (licensed) real estate agent, broker, or professional. Any information, advice, opinions, or any other communication from the coach does not constitute legal, financial, or professional real estate advice, representation, or services. The coach disclaims any responsibility and liability in this respect.”

You’ll also want to include a general disclaimer stating that you can’t guarantee and are not responsible for any (monetary) results or outcomes from your coaching, such as a 12% ROI on every deal the client makes or even that the client will close on a deal (as that is dependent on multiple factors, including whether they even qualify for a loan).

Learn more about this disclaimer and other disclaimers you’ll need in this blog post on the 7 Key Essentials for the Ultimate Coaching Disclaimer.

5. The best online coaching disclaimer for... career coaches

The next online coaching disclaimer is for career coaching.

Even though you’re helping your clients with their career goals, that does not mean you will help them find a (better) job or will arrange for an annual raise or benefits. You’re a coach, not a recruiter or their HR department.

That is why you need an explicit online coaching disclaimer stating that the following:

  1. You are not (acting in the capacity of) a career counsellor, human resources professional, or recruiter.

  2. You are not providing any career counselling, job placement, or HR services.

Here’s one of the online coaching disclaimer examples you could use:

“The coach is not your (licensed) career counsellor, human resources professional, or recruiter. Any information, advice, opinions, or any other communication from the coach does not constitute or result in career counselling, job placement, or HR services. The coach disclaims any responsibility and liability in this respect.”

You’ll also want to include a general disclaimer stating that you can’t guarantee and are not responsible for any (monetary) results or outcomes from your coaching, like a promotion, a higher salary, or a bonus.
